Companions’ Program

The Institute has organized a Companions’ Program for Wednesday and Thursday, 25 and 26 October, which will include visits to: 1) the Doka coffee mill and plantation as well as La Paz Waterfall Gardens and 2) Irazu volcano, Lankester Botanical Garden and the Orosi valley.

Wednesday, 25 October

You will visit the Doka coffee mill and plantation, where your guide will provide a brief overview of Costa Rica’s coffee or “golden grain” and you will walk through fern, flower and strawberry farms.

Subsequently, you will tour La Paz Waterfall Gardens, a natural park where you will visit an aviary, butterfly observatory, hummingbird garden, historical house, frog exhibit and serpentarium. You will also take a walk on the spectacular trails that lead to Magia Blanca waterfall.

A buffet lunch will be offered after the walk; subsequently, you will be driven back to San Jose.

It is recommended that you bring a light jacket, comfortable walking shoes, insect repellent, camera and binoculars.

Thursday, 26 October

You will visit Irazu volcano, Lankester Botanical Garden and the Orosi valley. The road to the volcano passes through fertile farms with all types of vegetables, and offers breathtaking panoramic views. Irazu’s main craters can be viewed from the volcano’s peak, and, on a clear day, it is also possible to see the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

Afterwards, you will be driven down to the city of Cartago to visit the Basílica de la Virgen de los Ángeles (Our Lady of the Angels Basilica), which is dedicated to the Patron Saint of Costa Rica and is a famous pilgrimage site. A visit to Lankester Botanical Garden will follow. This research center, owned by the University of Costa Rica, protects more than 800 orchid and bromelia species, as well as countless other plants.

Lastly, you will visit the Orosi valley, where one of the country’s few colonial temples is located.

Lunch will be offered at a local restaurant once the tour has ended.

It is recommended that you bring a hat, jacket, comfortable walking shoes, insect repellent, binoculars and camera.
