Mission to Haiti

At the invitation of The Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) David C. Hatch, Associate Deputy Director General represented the IICA Director General during a high-level mission of inter-American institutions and OAS Member State officials to Haiti from September 3-6. The high-level delegation headed by Ambassador Albert R. Ramdin also included Ambassador Barney Karran, Permanent Representative of Guyana to the OAS and Vice Chair of the Permanent Council; Dr. Mirta Roses Periago, Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO); Mr. John Sanbrailo, Executive Director of the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF); Ms. Dora Currea, General Manager Caribbean Country Department at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB); Permanent Representatives and Alternate Representatives of OAS Member States like Costa Rica, Trinidad and Tobago, the United States of America and Brazil; and Ambassadors from Canada and Argentina residing in Haiti and Mexico.

When asked about the objectives of the three-day mission, OAS Assistant Secretary General, Ambassador Albert Ramdin said “this was an opportunity to look at the positive side of Haiti; showcase the achievements of the inter-American agencies; and highlight the success stories that characterize the cooperation among these agencies individually and collectively.”

One of IICA’s projects, Pro Huerta, was showcased during the mission. This project, in cooperation with Argentina and Canada, has created over 20,000  backyard organic gardens that feed some 50,000 Haitians.

The OAS Permanent Council on Wednesday 16 September 2009, expressed satisfaction with the inter-American mission to Haiti which took place September 3-6, and praised the leadership of the Chairman of the Haiti Task Force and the Haiti group of Friends, Ambassador Albert R. Ramdin; they also welcomed the collaborative efforts among the participating Inter-American institutions and expressed the hope that this cooperation will strengthen in the coming months.
