The Regional Fund for Agricultural Technology, FONTAGRO, is a consortium to promote research and innovation in the agricultural sector with the direct participation of Latin American and Caribbean countries in securing priorities and financing research projects. It aims to contribute to the reduction of poverty, to promote competitiveness and to encourage the sustainable management of natural resources.
The Fund consists of more than US$48 million invested by the member countries, and administered by the Inter American Development Bank (IDB), plus counterpart project funding and other resources provided by sponsors and other research and development organizations, among which the CGIAR Centers have had a significant contribution in the past. The Fund member countries are Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Spain, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
The Fund is managed by a Board representing member countries and a Technical Administrative Secretariat (TAS) to which IICA provides technical support through its Northern Region Technical Coordination, based in the IICA Washington, DC Office.
