"Facilitating the Development of Agricultural Insurance in The Americas"
February 17th, 2010

Agricultural Insurance in the Americas
Agricultural insurance is an essential risk management tool that can help farmers who are particularly vulnerable to the effects of natural hazards, such as floods, hurricanes and drought, all of which are increasingly occurring due to climate change.

However, many countries do not sufficiently value the importance of agriculture insurance, and therefore they lack policies, laws, instruments, credit, and investment, to take full advantage of the benefits provided by a sound agricultural insurance program.

The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), in coordination with the Latin American Association for the Development of Agricultural Insurance (ALASA), will host a seminar aimed at facilitating the development of adequate agricultural insurance schemes and products in Latin America and the Caribbean in a broader strategic framework.  Presenters will be represented from the public sector, Europe, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as the United States.

Specific objectives for the Seminar include:

  • To review the state of agricultural insurance in the hemisphere, regionally and by country
  • To discuss the successes and challenges encountered in implementing agricultural insurance
  • To understand each participant’s priorities, plans and programs for further expansion of agricultural insurance
  • To determine how to work more effectively and collectively together with international agencies, donors and the private sector in the hemisphere and with individual countries in agricultural insurance and risk management
  • To establish a venue for a broader dialog regarding the future of agricultural insurance in LAC countries

Venue:
