Repositioning Agriculture and Rural Life

IICA JAMAICA'S STRATEGIC AREA OF COOPERATION

Contributing to the Repositioning of Agriculture and Rural Live a New Institutional Framework

The office supports the public and private sectors of the community of agriculture and rural life in Jamaica towards repositioning the sector favourably within the country's development agenda. Assisting the country to modernize the institutional framework for agriculture and rural development is also a key plank of this thrust.

The Minister of Agriculture visited the IICA Headquaters in Costa Rica to participate at the forum of leaders in Agriculture and to learn about sucessful agricultural projects in Costa Rica. During his visit, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed to facilitate technical assistance in the Ministry's priority areas, these includes:

  • The training of Agriculture extension officers in Greenhouse technology
  • Conducting research to determine the true contribution of agriculture to Gross Domestic Products
  • The visit of IICA crop specialists to Jamaica to provide guidance on propagation of certain crops in Jamaica

The two Hurricane Dean Recovery Projects initiated by IICA and funded by the Canadain International Development Agency, (CIDA) and the Pan American Development Foundation(PADF)/Chevron respectively, came to a succesful close in the first quarter of 2008. The projects provided necessary inputs for small poultry farmers in Mountain Pass, St. Catherine, greenhouse farmers from Manchester and open field farmers from Elim, St. Elizabeth whose operations were devastated by the hurricane.
