Trinidad and Tobago 2009 Heads of State and Government maintain that the adoption of a broad-based multidimensional and multisectoral approach to thinking and acting in agriculture and the rural milieu is a key factor for sustainable development and food security. |

In keeping with the theme of the meeting “Securing Our Citizens’ Future by Promoting Human Prosperity, Energy Security and Environmental Sustainability,” the Declaration of Commitment of Port of Spain contains mandates related to food security, agriculture and rural life, energy security, environmental sustainability, international cooperation and Summit follow-up, linked to the activities of the different stakeholders in the public, private and social sectors of agriculture.
In addition, they stated their support for efforts to reposition agriculture and rural issues and priorities in national strategies. | |

In both the Declaration and the Plan of Action of the Fourth Summit of the Americas, the Heads of State and Government renewed their commitment to improving agriculture and rural life. To this end, they pledged to support implementation of the Ministerial Agreement of Guayaquil 2005, which the Ministers of Agriculture approved at the Third Ministerial Meeting. Also, they pledged to build a strong and inclusive institutional framework based on the coordination of economic, labor and social policies, in order to contribute to the generation of decent work. |

The Heads of State and Government endorsed the agreement reached by the Ministers of Agriculture in their 2003 Ministerial Meeting. The government leaders recognized the importance of making a sustained effort to improve the living conditions of rural dwellers by promoting investments and creating an environment conducive to the improvement of agriculture, to contribute to social development, rural prosperity and food security. To that end, they endorsed the implementation of the second Hemispheric Ministerial Agreement: the AGRO 2003-2015 Plan. |

The Third Summit marked a turning point for agriculture and rural life. At the Summit, the Heads of State and Government recognized the important contribution that agriculture and rural life make to their countries´ efforts to alleviate poverty and achieve sustainable development. They acknowledge this potential in defining agriculture´s dual role as a way of life for millions of rural inhabitants and as a strategic sector of the socioeconomic system for generating prosperity. |
